great discussion. I am actually a first time bmw owner, I currently have a 04 525i, earlier this week I got my k+dcan cord in the mail but the software that came with it does not work on windows 10 and currently the only laptop I have is running win 10, I have found multiple links that say they work on win 10 but no real directions as to how exactly the get all the software up and running. now to my thoughts on this posting comong from someone that wants to learn both tuning and coding for my car, I think it is a sstrech to go out of your way ti teach someone you don't know how to cpode or tune there car, but knowing this is a hard subject to learn, well for some, others find it easy I think if you know what your doing and someone is doing all they can to find the information so they can learn I think you should definantly offer any help you reasonable can, im not saying do it for them or even do much but maybe give them the right places to find the correct information themselves so they can learn cuz speaking from experience it is hard to filter thru all the different information on this issue and know which is correct and current from which is old outdated or just simply does not work .

Well first place would be great to start reading "tuning books" there are tons of material on engine operations, volumetric efficiencies, how the ignition advance works etc. You simply can't find all the info you need by just relying on what's available to specific platform. You need to dig into basics before you even touch the car. When that is done, learn how to pull bin from the car(which is half the problem). Now once you have your rom(bin) you need to modify it. In N54/N55 Wedge,JakeY and JakeH did conversion from HEX to XDF so tables are already there for basic stuff. If there is no material for your car, dig into WinOLS and find your own maps then port them (or mod in bin directly). You gotta know the basics however in order to knwo what you are doing, then the other problem.... flashing your new tuned bin into your car(Ktag,Kess are good ones). Its not exactly all that simple to just "tune the car". N5x platform has a lot already done that is why its ez to get started if you already know what you are doing but you can never stop learning. Helping someone from scratch isn't in anyone's interest as it takes away from personal time for now reward... if that makes sense

I thought it was pretty basic for our specific platform if you understand general concepts. If you want something to hit the really basic concepts, there's tons of resources. View: https://www.amazon.com/Maximum-Boost-Turbocharger-Engineering-Performance/dp/0837601606
There's classes and tons of info out there.

Hi

I'd like to learn a whole bunch more about this subject. Is that "THE BOOK" that you would recommend on modern turbo engines? Any other good places to start?

~3 years later looking back at this thread
the main source of frustration to figure out self tuning for these cars is mostly due to the complexity of the dme itself
learning the basics is always a pre-requisite but the learning curve is still huge as there are too many undocumented (complex maths) factors and calculations involved which skews the input and leave you head scratching

the best way to learn what the tables do is to change a little, get a log, check if the changes you made took effect, rinse and repeat
definitely not for the faint of heart at this stage but could be done if you can afford to waste time and find the needle in the haystack by looking all the posts in different threads/forums

at this stage, i further appreciate on v8bait's effort on putting together the tuning spreadsheet as its definitely not easy.

I was recommended this book which I have read. It's dry reading but seems to cover a lot and dispells some common myths/hacks.

Hello Spoolers,

I figured I would compile a list of useful tools/files/resources for tuning the N54

Please Note!
All resources found here do not belong to SpoolStreet or myself. These files are here for informative purposes and using anything found here is meant to be used at your own risk.

JB4 MHD BEF Maps - 12/13/16

Code:
1) Modified all E85 maps for 40% more cranking fuel during cold starts to reduce E85 hard starting in colder weather.

JB4 Mobile App Firmware - G5_ISO_32_5
Code:
1) Setup JB4 to automatically change itself to map0 if a flashing device is connected to the OBDII port. Upon switching to map0 it will flash the turn signal indicators to alert the user.
2) Added battery reset and register (when installing a new battery) under the menu 1/7 adaption resets.

JB4 Firmware Update
The latest firmware later REQUIRES JB4 INTERFACE DATED 3/1/15 OR NEWER AND SETTING CHANGES. All Duty Bias (formerly CPS) must be set to 0 or 50 to avoid 30FF under boost codes. 3rd gear boost limiting should also be set to 0 to disable. Menu4 in dash should be set to 3 for a factory flashed car or 2 for a back end flashed car. Failure to follow these directions will result in low boost and poor performance.*** Also note the new menu 12 range is 2000rpm to 3000rpm with a default of 2800rpm. Going too low on menu 12 may cause low throttle boost oscillation

MHD v1.50 - 01/04/17 (Mobile App)
Code:
- Added a "generate updated BIN" function in Stock map operations to export the proper and updated OEM map.
- Added 3 adaption resets: Intake Mass Flow, Load Control, Fuel High Pressure System.

Knowledge is power and teaching soneone else how to code/tune is a lot like showing them where you buried your bone.
I Wouldn't want to learn how to code, I would just like to learn how to use this platform, MHD with tuner pro. I'm pretty familiar with a lot of tuning software I do more standalone tuning than flashing. But thanks to a customer who convinced me to do one car now I have a lot more coming in, I am willing to even pay someone who has the time to teach me.
Tuning is the part I got down. Ive actually have few certifications. tuning is what I belive is the same we're Fuel Mass=Arimass / Target AFR.
My main questions are.
How to tune the fueling, Is it just all commanded lambda/AFR?
Is it like ecoboost, mopar tuning on hptuners? where the dme/pcm/ecu has all the information and it just adjusted everything base on
base on target/commanded AFR's?
Timing? or is it all torque requested and what tables to adjust?
mainly the software terminology and tables that need adjusting and what tables not to touch.
This is what I mainly seem to have a hard time finding and I don't have a lot of free time but I would love to learn.

I’m in the same boat as you. I’ve tuned many different platforms and would gladly pay someone to show me the intricacies of using tunerpro with the MHD platform. I just want to be able to tune my own car. I’m pretty sure my current tuner would not give me an unlocked version of my own tune, but I have yet to ask. My guess is I would need to start off from scratch to tune my car.

+1000 on this. People take this platform for granted when it comes to tuning since a lot of the more nuanced tuning elements (injector scaling & latency, maf scaling, VE, afr targeting) are basically handled automatically thanks to closed loop fueling and speed density from the factory.

That said, the N54 dme has it's own nuances that only experience and time with the platform will teach you. Those who did spend the time to discover it from scratch or learn it should not be expected to spill it for free to every average joe who wants to tune their own car.
You all have it right, most important thing is first to understand combustion engine 101, that's missing of whole bunch, they just ask for those magic knobs to turn to get holy grail out of these platforms.

I have get huge amount of help from here, thanks wheela, nyt, carabuser, shitrock and few others they are more than helpful but it's not all free lunch.

When i came here, i tryed to show that i will do the recearch work to give back some deep information as excange for help what these helpful guys gave me.

Be humble and do your homework is the base

Ps, sorry if i forgot someone who helped me out in this.
