When you ceramic coat a dump its done inside and out.

This reduces heat transfer dramatically, as most mechanics will tell you fix or reduce the heat in the first place.

Heat tape is great and works very well but not a solution as it doesn't last forever.
What ceramic coating are you using that gets applied inside the piping? Also, what items are you applying it to the inside of?

I'm not seeing a filter on the turbo in OP's picture... I'm also 35 and my eyes aren't what they were 10 years ago. Surely he doesn't run filterless right?

It's called turbo guard. It provides basically ZERO filtering other than blocking large debris. It still sucks in dust etc. People like them because it makes the turbo whine louder, that is all I can figure. Or, if you have ZERO space for a filter like the supercharged LS motor in the E90 on this forum.

My turbo costs roughly 2 grand and I need a vac source for my PCV system, hence I run a filter on the single turbo. I guess if I had some on3 or knock off inexpensive turbo F it run a turbo guard and listen to the turbo whine? If you want more whine T51R mod it. I threw a turbo guard on my 6466 w/ T51R mod and it was silly loud. Talk about a whistle.

Some guys do it over wiring harnesses to prevent them from going brittle

That makes sense, if anyone needs to protect a wire, line, etc DEI makes products for that that look decent, not gold sticky tape.

I stand by my statement, the Gold tape is fugly and as @9krpmrx8 said, "Monkey see, Monkey do" ;)

Next time you are working on it, it is super easy to move the windshield washer fluid neck. Just a thought, but it's probably fine with tape and the dp wrapped especially if it has not melted yet.

You don't run a turbo blanket?
No space for turbo blanket I tried. I am gonna cut one and custom fit it. It hasn’t melted at all I should be fine. I might just relocate next year. Turbo is heat ceramic coated and all the piping too then wrapped.

Running a screen over your turbo is a great way to show everyone that you don't understand basic physics. I have seen 100 whp LOSS from running a screen (not on an N54) versus a filter. I think this is well documented since basically the beginning of time but the BMW community still seems to do it, probably so they can get more Instagram likes. Which is also why you see the stupid gold tape on everything

If you run a very porous screen and are only trying to keep larger objects out, you should be fine powerwise...also assuming you have a velocity stack on the compressor inlet. Definitely agree though that a fine mesh screen will have wayyyy less open area than the same size mesh air filter with the filter height and all of the pleat surface area.

Road race guys have seen this for cooling. Running large screens are shown to reduce airflow.
